Frequently Asked Questions About Your Deck

Do I need to seal my brand new pressure treated deck?

Absolutely! New wood prevents the essential penetration of a clear wood finish for a variety of reasons (e.g., moisture content, mill glaze, closed wood pores, etc.).  Leaving it completely unprotected during this initial period is unwise. New wood should age gracefully, avoiding the shock that results from direct contact with the elements that can lead to excessive splitting, warping, cracking and color loss.

How long a drying time does the stain need to dry before it rains?

It can be rained on 2 hours after it is applied. Of course, the exact stain and other factors come into consideration.

How long does it take for oil to soak in after sealing?

There will be an oily residue on wood for 48-72 hours after sealing. It can still be walked on but there may be some tracking. The best solution is to stay off the deck for 2 days. However, you will do no damage to the finish if you walk on it.

How often should Semi-Transparent stain be applied?

It should be done at least every two years. Optimal results are done every 12-18 months on horizontal surfaces.

What does maintenance consist of?

A light cleaning and then giving the wood a chance to dry. After drying, the maintenance coat will protect and help maintain the beauty of the wood.

Why does product stop beading water?

After the product has completely soaked in, the beading will stop. This does not mean that it has stopped performing. Stains are made to spread water out so it will dry up as quickly as possible. It is still keeping water out even though it is not beading water. Even though the color is faded, the resins and oil are still in the wood so it will dry quickly.

The deck is too dark after staining?

It takes 10 days to 2 weeks for a stain to reach its true color after it is applied
